Privacy Policy

Boya Maple Inc. ("Boya", "we", "us") runs two after-school brands in Toronto, Ontario: Boya Chinese (博雅中文, byzw.ca) and Boya Math (博雅数学, bysx.ca). Both brands share one online learning platform for our students and their families, and this policy covers both. It explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We follow Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
1. Information we collect
About parents and guardians: name, mobile phone number, email address, postal code, account password (stored only in hashed form), and, if you connect WeChat, your WeChat identifiers, nickname and profile picture.
About students: Chinese and English names, nickname, gender, date of birth, current school, Chinese-language background, preferred class format, and relationship to the parent account.
Learning records: class enrolment and schedule, leave and make-up requests, assessment reports, homework and practice answers (which may include text, images or voice recordings), scores, and in-app rewards.
Technical information: IP address, device type, operating system, browser, screen size, sign-in history, and error diagnostics.
2. How we use it
- To enrol students, schedule classes and manage attendance, leave and make-up lessons.
- To deliver lessons, homework and assessments, and report progress to parents.
- To send service messages: class reminders, schedule changes, verification codes and account notices.
- To keep accounts secure, prevent abuse, and fix technical problems.
- To meet legal, tax and accounting obligations.
We do not sell personal information. We do not use it for third-party advertising.
3. Text messages, email and WeChat notices
If you provide a mobile number or email address, or connect WeChat, we may send you messages about your child's classes: class reminders, schedule or room changes, and account or security notices. Reminders are sent about once per scheduled lesson. You can turn reminders off at any time: reply STOP to any text message, use the unsubscribe link in any email, or change your preference in the parent portal. Reply HELP to any text for help. Verification codes and essential account notices may still be sent while your account is active. Message and data rates from your carrier may apply.
We do not share your mobile number or messaging consent with third parties for their own marketing.
4. Who we share information with
We share personal information only with service providers that help us run the school and the platform, and only for that purpose. They are bound by contract to protect it.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the safety of a student or others.
5. Storage outside Canada
Our platform is hosted in the United States, and some providers process information in other countries. Information stored outside Canada is subject to the laws of that country and may be accessed by its courts or authorities.
6. Children's information
Most of our students are under 18. We collect student information from, and with the consent of, a parent or legal guardian. A parent or guardian can review, correct or request deletion of their child's information at any time by contacting us.
7. Cookies and local storage
Our web apps use browser storage and cookies to keep you signed in and remember settings such as language. We do not use advertising cookies.
8. How long we keep information
We keep account and learning records while the student is enrolled and for at least 2 and no more than 5 years after the student leaves, so families can return and we can answer questions about past classes. Financial records are kept as long as tax law requires. After that, we delete or anonymize the information.
9. How we protect it
Access is limited to staff who need it for their role, and teachers see only their own classes. Data is sent over encrypted connections, and passwords are stored in hashed form. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected families and the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as the law requires.
10. Your rights
You may ask to see the personal information we hold about you or your child, correct it, or withdraw consent. Withdrawing consent may mean we can no longer provide some services. We will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
11. Changes to this policy
We will post any changes on this page and update the "Last updated" date. For significant changes, we will notify parents by email or in the parent portal.
